Description
Production for this small batch release began in 2016 at Hook Norton Brewery where the mashing and fermenting occurred. The mash bill of 60% rye, 30% corn and 10% malted barley was lautered, unlike the traditional process used for American rye whiskys. Inspired by a recipe passed on to Cotswolds Distillery by the late David Pickerell, ex-Master Distiller at Maker’s Mark, the wash was distilled in a Holstein hybrid pot & column still. The whisky was aged for 8 years at Cotswolds Distillery in a re-charred American Oak cask. Just one barrel was produced, resulting in a truly limited-edition whisky.
The year 2024 was chosen to release the whisky to celebrate Cotswolds Distillery’s 10th anniversary and 175 years of brewing at Hook Norton respectively.
The name, Traitors Ford, originates from a location rich in English history near Cotswolds Distillery and Hook Norton Brewery. During the Great English Civil War between 1642-1644, the Ford was used by both Royalist armies and Cromwell’s Parliamentary Forces as they ran supplies up to the armies fighting the Battle of Edgehill. Many local villages and churches endured soldiers stealing food, goods, and livestock. Over 500 years have now passed, and Traitors Ford Whiskey symbolises a new legacy for the land’s rich history.
Dan Szor, Cotswolds Distillery Founder comments “I couldn’t be more excited that the long-awaited day has arrived when we can release this fantastic cask, one of our oldest whiskys to date, a celebration of both our amazing location and a collaboration between two terrific brands here in the North Cotswolds.”
James Clarke, Managing Director at Hook Norton Brewery comments, “Here at Hook Norton Brewery we always look to work closely with local suppliers and producers so producing a whisky with our friends at Cotswold Distillery just over the hill was a natural fit. Brewing and distilling go hand in hand and back through history so it has been great to work together to produce this historic and unique whisky.”
